9th convocation of RU

The ninth convocation of Rajshahi University (RU) was held at its central stadium on Sunday amid huge enthusiasm and festivity.
President Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university inaugurated the programme as chief guest while eminent geo-scientist Prof Talat Ahmed, Vice-chancellor of the Jamia Miliya Islamia University, New Delhi delivered convocation speech.
Some 4771 graduates wearing black robes and square hats, symbol of their academic success participated in this year’s convocation.
The Convocation traditionally begun with the convocation procession led by the Chancellor of the University, started from Sabash Bangladesh playground and ended at the venue at University stadium, decorated with flowers and colorful pandals.
The main Convocation programme was started with recitation from the holy books of four major religions as per the university tradition.
In his speech, President Abdul Hamid, terming the graduates greater human resources of the country said, “You have to build yourself as worthy citizens for your survival in this competitive world involving yourselves fully with the advancement of the information and bio-technology knowledge”.
Referring to the government’s programme of building the country as developed one by 2041, the President said “I believe, the integrated efforts of all concerned people including the young graduates could be able to implement the programme successfully.
Prof Talat Ahmed, in his convocation speech stressed that universities need to nurture freedom of thought and the freedom to big dream.
“Universities need to develop spaces wher studnts and teachers could meet, debate, argue, dialogue and generate knowledge”, he also said.
Prof Talat also mentioned that the main focus should be student-centric while a university determines its policies. RU vice-chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin, Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarear Jahan, university deans of different institutions and dpartments, among others addressed the convocation programme.
