8 persons to get Independence Award this year

The government has announced the names of seven out of nine recipients of the Independence Award 2025, honouring their remarkable contributions at the national level. The names of the remaining two awardees have not yet been disclosed.

According to sources, the honourees include—Commander-in-Chief of the Liberation War MAG Osmani (posthumous), pop legend Azam Khan (posthumous), poet Al Mahmud (posthumous), leftist politician and intellectual Badruddin Umar, BRAC founder Fazle Hasan Abed (posthumous), sculptor Novera Ahmed (posthumous), and BUET student Abrar Fahad (posthumous).

The Independence Award, the nation’s highest civilian honour, is given for exceptional contributions in various fields. Each recipient will receive a gold medal, a monetary reward, and a certificate of recognition. Since 1977, the government has given the award every year on the occasion of Independence Day on March 26.
