9 killed in Noakhali, Habiganj road mishaps

At least nine people were killed in road mishaps in Noakhali and Habiganj districts on Tuesday.
In Noakhali: A truck has run over a CNG autorickshaw and killed six people in Noakhali’s Kabirhat Upazila.

The accident occurred around 2:30pm on Tuesday near Islamia Alia Madrasa on the Kabirhat–Basurhat road, said Kabirhat Police chief Shahin Mia.
Police have yet to identify the victims.

The dead have been identified as autorickshaw driver Khokon, 46, passengers Md Sumon, 33, Shahadat Hossain, 36, and 26-year-old Tanim Hasan, a third-year Honours student at Noakhali Government College.

Police, however, could not immediately identify the other two victims, including a woman, reports bdnews24.com

The security force and witnesses said, at noon, an autorickshaw carrying five passengers was travelling from Maijdee town toward Basurhat. En route, the vehicle’s front axle broke, causing it to veer out of control and swerve into the opposite lane. At that moment, an oncoming truck collided with the autorickshaw, dragging it a distance.

The autorickshaw driver and three passengers died instantly.
Officer Shahin said that the two injured individuals were taken to the Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors also declared them dead.
He added that upon receiving the news, police recovered the bodies of three victims from the scene and took them to the station.

The driver and his assistant fled immediately after the incident, leaving the truck behind. It was later seized and taken to the police station.

In Habiganj: three people were killed and 32 others injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway in Kadamtali area of Shayestaganj upazila, Habiganj, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police and locals, the collision took place when a Dhaka-bound Ena Paribahan bus attempted to overtake a truck and collided head-on with a Royal Coach bus coming from the opposite direction.

The deceased were identified as Raju Mia (45), son of Mukit Mia from Barachar village under Nabiganj upazila, and Hanif (60), son of Abul Khayer from the Shahibagh area in Sreemangal. The identity of another victim, aged around 40, could not be confirmed immediately, reports UNB.
Shayestaganj Fire Service Station Officer Ariful Islam said, “We recovered two bodies from the spot, while another person succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital.”
Habiganj Sadar Hospital authorities said a total of 32 injured passengers were admitted to the hospital. Of them, 11 critically injured patients were transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, according to UNB.

Abu Taher Dewan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shayestaganj Highway Police, said police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the news and carried out rescue operations.
Traffic on the highway was temporarily halted but later resumed, he said, adding that the accident occurred due to excessive speed.
