A Dhaka court has ordered 84 pro-Awami League lawyers to be sent to jail in connection with allegations of assault, vandalism, and attempted murder during the ongoing anti-discrimination movement. The court, however, granted bail to nine lawyers eight of whom are wome
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Sunday following a hearing.
Earlier in the day, the accused lawyers had surrendered to the court through their legal representatives and sought bail. The bail hearing began at around 3:30 PM and, after lengthy proceedings, the court delivered its verdict after 5 PM. Dhaka Bar Association President Khorshed Mia Alam confirmed the development. He said, “The defense sought bail for the accused, but the prosecution opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail to nine individuals, including eight female lawyers.”
The accused lawyers included former bar association presidents Sayedir Rahman Manik, Shah Alam, Mahbubur Rahman, Abu Sayeed Sagar, Asadur Rahman Rochi, Cyber Tribunal Public Prosecutor Nazrul Islam Shamim, along with other former bar members.
