A significant majority of Bangladeshis—68 percent—support having a non-partisan president with no ties to political parties, while 83 percent advocate for the head of state to be elected directly by the people, according to a survey conducted by the Electoral Reform Commission.

The survey, carried out through the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) from December 20 to 22, 2024, covered 46,080 households nationwide to gauge public opinion on electoral reforms.
Among the respondents, 65 percent called for local elections to be held before the next general elections. Meanwhile, only 13 percent expressed satisfaction with the existing system, indicating widespread demand for reforms.

The survey explored public perspectives on a range of election-related topics, including the process of electing the president, political party registration, the ‘No vote’ option, and the structure of local and national elections.

In response to the findings, the Electoral Reform Commission submitted its recommendations to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus last week. While the commission endorsed the idea of a non-partisan president, it stopped short of recommending direct presidential elections.

Instead, it proposed that the president be chosen by lawmakers from a bicameral legislature, comprising elected representatives.

The draft report of the survey has been made publicly available by the BBS. These findings and proposals mark a significant step in the ongoing discussions about reforming the country’s election process.
