DU Correspondent :

The Dhaka University (DU) administration has suspended eight students for their alleged involvement in the mob killing of Tofazzal Hossain, 35, who was beaten to death on suspicion of being a thief at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall.

In response to the incident, the administration has also removed the hall’s provost, Shah Md Masum, appointing Professor Md Elias Al-Mamun of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology as his replacement.

In an official press release, the university stated, “The residential seats of the eight students have been cancelled, and the university authorities have temporarily suspended them from all academic activities.”

Among the suspended students, three are former leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. Jalal Ahmed, a former deputy secretary of science and technology affairs and a student of the Physics Department, Ahsan Ullah, a former secretary of mass communication and development affairs and a student of the Mathematics Department, and Al Hossain Sajjad, the office secretary and a student of the Geography and Environment Department, are all implicated.

The other students facing expulsion include Mohammad Sumon of the Department of Soil, Water, and Environment; Muttakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science; Md Firoz Kabir of the Department of Botany, and two Physics Department students, Md Abdus Samad and Wazibul Alam.

Additionally, the university has announced the formation of a new central probe body to further investigate the incident and identify any additional individuals involved.

Six of the eight accused — Jalal Ahmed, Mohammad Sumon, Ahsan Ullah, Muttakin Sakin, Al Hossain Sajjad, and Wazibul Alam — have already been arrested. All six have reportedly given confessional statements in court.
This tragic incident has shocked the university community, prompting calls for stricter regulations and greater accountability within the university’s residential halls.
