Pacific Jeans Group has announced that its eight factories at the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) will resume operations on Thursday, a week after they were closed due to worker unrest.
The decision was confirmed in a notice signed by Managing Director Syed Mohammad Tanvir on Tuesday night.
“As the situation has improved and a conducive environment for work has been restored, the management has decided to reopen the factories,” the notice said. The group had earlier declared an indefinite closure of operations from 16 October under Section 12(1) of the Bangladesh EPZ Labour Law 2019, following violent clashes sparked by rumours of worker deaths.
In the latest announcement, management urged all employees to return to work on time and maintain discipline and harmony to ensure smooth production.
The factories reopening include two units of Pacific Jeans Ltd, Jeans 2000, Universal Jeans, NHT Fashion, Pacific Accessories, Pacific Workwear, and Pacific Attires.
The closure followed unrest that began on 16 October when clashes broke out near NHT Fashion Ltd, leading to vandalism after a video circulated online falsely claiming worker casualties.
