Eight officials and employees working at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) have been temporarily suspended due to an ongoing agitation. The suspension was officially confirmed in a memorandum issued on Tuesday, May 13, under Memorandum No. 489, signed by Dr. Zayedul Hasan, Project Director and Managing Director of the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL).
The memorandum stated that, for safety reasons, the eight suspended individuals are required to cease entering the construction area of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant immediately.
The suspended officials and employees include Iktiar Uddin Mohammad Biplob, Assistant Manager (Mechanical); Shamim Ahmed, Assistant Manager (Mechanical); Md. Monir, Senior Assistant Manager (Mechanical); Md. Salah Uddin, Assistant Manager (Mechanical); Md. Hossainuzzaman Khan, Senior Deputy Assistant Manager (Electrical); Md. Golam Azam, Assistant Manager (Mechanical); Riaz Uddin, Technician (Electronics); and Md. Ismail Hossain, Technician (Electrician).
Ruhul Quddus, the site in-charge for the Rooppur project, confirmed the temporary suspension, noting, “I received the letter in the mail this morning. I don’t know anything more than that.”
An official working at NPCBL, who requested to remain anonymous, explained that the suspensions were linked to an ongoing agitation over various demands from the affected employees.
This move comes just days after 18 other officials and employees were relieved of their duties.
Attempts to contact Project Director and Managing Director Dr. Zayedul Hasan for further comment on the suspensions were unsuccessful.
In a related development, on May 8, 18 officers and employees from the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited were also relieved of their duties in accordance with regulation 52.1 of the Employees Service Resolution 2025. Among the relieved employees, 15 were B.Sc. engineers and 3 were Diploma engineers.
