A total of 764 retired officials under the public administration ministry, who were deprived of due ranks and financial benefits over the last 15 years during the Awami League regime, will now be provided with the long-awaited facilities.
This includes promotions in rank and financial compensations as per the recommendations of a review committee formed to address their grievances.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the senior secretary to the public administration ministry during a press briefing at the ministry.
At the time of the announcement, a group of the deprived officials were seen staging a sit-in protest outside the senior secretary’s office, demanding immediate implementation of the decision.
Referring to the recommendations and the government’s in-principle agreement, the senior secretary clarified that while the move is a positive step, certain regulations must be adhered to before full implementation.
“This is not actually a promotion, but rather recognition of social status,” he said. “An official order will be issued granting them due financial benefits and positions. Based on this, they will also receive monetary compensation.
The government has agreed in principle; it is now a matter of completing the procedural formalities.”
Explaining the process further, he noted that granting a position is different from an actual appointment. In this case, an official government order will formally recognize their elevated status.
He also mentioned that the Attorney General’s office, which follows
specific scientific rules, will handle the calculation of benefits and compensations.
“The same principles will apply to the calculation of pensions for the affected officials,” he added.
The protest outside the office underscored the frustration of the retired officials, many of whom expressed skepticism about how quickly the decision would translate into tangible benefits.
One retired official participating in the sit-in programme, said, “We have waited for over a decade. While this announcement brings hope, we want assurances that this will not be delayed further.”
This development follows growing demands from retired officials who claim they were systematically denied their rightful entitlements under successive administrations.
