The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka celebrated the 70th anniversary of “Outbreak of the Glorious Revolution of National Liberation of Algeria” on Friday evening, hosting a reception attended by dignitaries, diplomats, and public figures from diverse sectors.
The event, held at a city hotel, commemorated the historic November 1, 1954, when the first shots of the revolution were fired, igniting a seven-year struggle that ultimately led to Algeria’s independence from French colonial rule, reports BSS.
As the event’s chief guest, Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmeen S. Murshid spoke about the longstanding bonds between Bangladesh and Algeria, recalling Algeria’s early recognition of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 as the first Arab nation.
She noted that bilateral ties continue to strengthen and urged both nations to explore new opportunities for collaboration.
Highlighting the importance of advancing all pending agreements between the two countries, Murshid expressed the hope for further expansion of cooperation in key sectors. In his address, Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, reflected on the significance of the Algerian Revolution, stating that the historic date symbolizes not only Algeria’s liberation but also inspired global movements for self-determination and independence. He praised the Algerian Revolution as a catalyst for decolonization worldwide, underscoring its enduring influence. Ambassador Saidani also recounted Bangladesh’s participation in the 1973 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Algiers and Algeria’s instrumental support to Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 1974.
“Relations between Algeria and Bangladesh continue to develop and flourish, thanks to the relentless commitment of the leaders of the two countries to enhance consultations and exchanges across various sectors,” he said.
On Saturday, the envoy said, Bangladesh and Algeria remain aligned in their commitment to promoting a fairer global order and addressing contemporary challenges. He said the two countries have been working together to strengthen bilateral relations, with recent approval by Algeria of four key draft agreements in agriculture and water resources, part of a broader set of 20 potential agreements.
