The government has announced that seven distinguished individuals will be awarded the prestigious Independence Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions in various fields. The Ministry of Cabinet Affairs released the list of recipients on Tuesday (March 11, 2025).
The recipients of the 2025 Independence Award are:
- Science and Technology – Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam (Posthumous)
- Literature – Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud (Posthumous)
- Culture – Navera Ahmed (Posthumous)
- Social Service – Sir Fazle Hasan Abed (Posthumous)
- Liberation War and Culture – Mohammad Mahbubul Haque Khan, also known as Azam Khan (Posthumous)
- Education and Research – Badruddin Mohammad Omar
- Youth Protest Movement – Abrar Fahad (Posthumous)
Additionally, the government has confirmed the retention of the posthumous award given to the founding leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the late President Ziaur Rahman, in 2003. The award, originally revoked in 2016 under the leadership of the current government, will be reinstated. Ziaur Rahman, who was the commander of the Z-Force during the 1971 Liberation War, will continue to be honored with the Independence Award.
The Independence Award, Bangladesh’s highest state honor, has been awarded annually since 1977 on Independence Day (March 26). The award recognizes individuals for their significant contributions to the nation’s progress and development across various fields.
