Staff Reporter:

Students from the seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University have announced new plans to surround New Market Police Station if the police officers accused of attacking their peers are not brought to justice and withdrawn within the next 24 hours.

The announcement was made on Monday evening at a gathering held at the Shaheed Minar of Dhaka College. The students also issued an ultimatum to take action against Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed within the same timeframe.

The students alleged that Dhaka College student Rakib was attacked with the intent to kill, and the police conducted a disgraceful assault on other students of Dhaka College. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the assistant commissioner (AC), officer-in-charge (OC), and other officials involved in the incident. The students also called for a thorough investigation and departmental action against those found guilty.

The incident has sparked widespread anger among the students of the seven colleges, putting increased pressure on both the university administration and law enforcement authorities to address their demands promptly.

On Monday afternoon, it was decided that Dhaka University will no longer conduct admission tests for the first-year undergraduate programmes at the seven colleges affiliated with the university. This decision will take effect from the 2024-25 academic session. As a result, the seven largest colleges in Dhaka will no longer be under the authority of Dhaka University.

Earlier, students from the seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University issued a four-hour ultimatum to the government, demanding immediate action on their six demands and threatened to wage tougher measures if their demands are not met by 4pm on Monday.
