6 killed in Sylhet road crash

Tragic news unfolded on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway in Darbasta area of Jaintapur upazila, where six family members, including two children, lost their lives in a collision between a pick-up van and a human hauler.

Among the deceased were Mongali Patra, Sabita Patra, 6-month-old Bijli, Susmita Patra, Ritu Patra, and Shamola Patra.

The accident occurred around 11:45 am, leaving four others injured. According to the Officer-in-Charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station, Tajul Islam, the collision happened as ten individuals were en route to Mokampunji for a wedding.

Despite efforts, six individuals succumbed to their injuries, with three pronounced dead at the scene and three others later at medical facilities.

This tragedy adds to the concerning statistics reported by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), with 5,024 fatalities recorded in 2023 alone, indicating the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures nationwide.
