57 Dhaka wards at high risk of dengue

A pre-monsoon survey of dengue fever conducted in Dhaka city has revealed that the Aedes larvae has been found in 43.53pc high rise buildings in two city corporation areas.
The survey also found that 57 wards of the Dhaka’s two city corporations are under threat of alarming dengue spreading.

The survey conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has revealed a deeply concerning situation. The disease control wing of the department conducted the survey in two city corporation areas of the capital from June 18 to 25.Professor Dr. Nazmul Islam, Director of the disease control department of DGHS, revealed the survey report at his office on Tuesday. The survey identified high-rise buildings as having the highest number of Aedes larvae.

The 27 risky wards of Dhaka North City (DNCC) are- 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37 and 38.
While the 28 risky wards of Dhaka South City (DSCC) are- 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 33, 34, 36, 41, 44, 46, 48, 50, 51, 54, 55 and 56.
Dr. Nazmul Islam said, in the DNCC area, larvae was found in 20.4pc of houses, while it was found in 15.47pc in the DSCC area. The DGHS official said that they have conducted survey in 3,149 houses of 40 wards in DNCC and 58 wards in DSCC areas. They have found Aedes larvae in 549 houses.

Meanwhile, the country recorded five more dengue deaths, 678 more cases in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning.
With the latest figure, the fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh reached to 61 this year, the data of the DGHS showed.
Among the new patients, 429 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside it, DGHS press release said.
It showed that a total of 1,669 dengue patients, including 1,100 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
The DGHS has recorded 9,871 dengue cases and 8,141 recoveries so far.

The country logged 281 dengue deaths in 2022 – the highest on record after 179 deaths recorded in 2019.
