The 53rd martyrdom anniversary of the great martyr Lance Naik Munshi Abdur Rauf was observed remembering the contribution of this country’s best son at Bir Shrestha Munsi Abdur Rauf Memorial Museum and Library meeting room on Saturday. A discussion meeting and prayer ceremony was organised in this regard by upazila administration and Kamarkhali Union Sudhijan.
In the morning, freedom fighter Kazi Motiul Islam Murad hoisted the national flag on the Bir Shrestha Munsi Abdur Rauf Memorial Museum and Library premises.
Bir Shreshtra’s sister Zohra Begum chaired the meeting and UP Chairman Chowdhury Rakib Hossain Iran spoke at the meeting. Lutfar Rahman, Kamarkhali Union Awami League President Zahidur Rahman Babu, General Secretary Moniruzzaman Target, Bir Muktijoddha Abu Bakkar Siddique were , among others, present on the occasion. Munshi Abdur Rauf, the only son of father Munshi Mehedi Hasan and mother Mokidunnesha, was born on 1st May 1943 in Raufnagar (Salamatpur) village of Kamarkhali Union of present Madukhali Upazila. He lost his father at the age of 11. During the War of Independence, he joined the 8th East Bengal Regiment while serving in his wing and participated in the Liberation War as a machine gunner under Sector Commander No. 8 in the defense of Chingrikhall at Burighat in the Mahalachari Canal area of Rangamati.
On April 20, 1971, Munshi Abdur Rauf’s machine gun fired two launches of the Pakistani army, a speedboat, and two platoon soldiers of the Pakistani army were buried. At this time, he was martyred by the cell thrown by the opponent. In 1996, 25 years after Abdur Rauf’s martyrdom, Burighat resident Jyotish Chandra Chakma and Dayal Krinch Chakma managed to identify his grave. A memorial was built there in 1997.
Besides, several institutions have been established in different parts of the country including Kamarkhali in Madhukhali in the name of Birshrestha under the initiative of the government.
