Bagerhat Correspondent :
Some 50 MPs (Members of) the 12th Parliament imported luxurious cars under free of customs duties. But after the dissolution of the parliament (on Aug.06, 2024) release of 47 cars out of 50 was stopped by the customs department. But seven (07) cars were already released before the August 06. Out of them 2 were high priced belonging to Barister Saydul Haq Suman and Sakib-al-Hasan. Sakib was able to release his car before August 06. Though Barister Suman was also able to release his car he will have to pay customs duties.
The rest 47 cars waiting for release cannot avail the “free of customs duties.” It may be mentioned here that such a luxurious car is normally selling in the market at least Tk.10.50 crore. But if the customs duties are deducted its price will be only Tk.1.25 crore. That is why a number of MPs who have more than one car also imported cars under free of customs duties. But after the dissolution of the Parliament the rest 47 imported cars (under free of customs duties) cannot be released without paying the customs duties at any way. It was announced by the National Board of Revenue (NBR). As a result, the importers have to pay customs duties at normal rate for the release of those imported luxurious cars.
