5 thousands people marooned in Satkhira

The upstream water flow from Aladipur area of Keshabpur upazila of Jessore district has caused severe waterlogging in Tentulia union of Tala upazila of Satkhira. This has left about 5,000 people stranded in Shirashuni village and surrounding areas. There has been a shortage of fresh water, water-borne diseases and health risks have increased. Hundreds of families have become unemployed.

Recently , it was seen that the upstream water from Keshabpur area is flowing and entering Shirashuni village of Tentulia union of Tala. Most of the houses in the village are submerged. Roads, agricultural lands, educational institutions are all under water.

This is severely disrupting the normal life of men and women. Selina Khatun of Shirashuni village said, “Our village has suddenly been flooded due to the combination of the upstream water and the heavy rains.” Cooking, farming, children’s education – everything is suffering.

Matiar Rahman from the same village said, “This water has destroyed our normal life for the past three years. Farming is stopped, there is no work, we cannot even leave the house.”

Shefali Begum said, “There is waist-deep water in our house. If someone dies, it will not be possible to take them to the cemetery. Many are suffering from itching and other water-borne diseases due to the lack of pure water.”

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Tala Deepa Rani Sarkar said, “Waterlogging is one of the main problems of the upazila. The obstructions of some canals have already been removed.
