An attack was carried out at the historic Narayanganj Press Club by a group of miscreants, injuring at least five journalists, including the former General Secretary of the Press Club and the district correspondent for the `Amar Desh’ newspaper. Police have arrested one individual, identified as Masud Rana Rony, in connection with the incident. The attack took place on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses reported that, earlier in the day, a group lead by Rony gathered at the Shaheed Minar in Chashara.
According to Rafiqul Islam Jibon, the General Secretary of Narayanganj Press Club, around 1 p.m., a group of 20-25 people ascended to the fifth floor of the club, where they launched their attack and vandalized the premises. When the journalists present attempted to resist, the attackers turned on them, injuring at least five, including Abu Saud Masud, the former President of the Narayanganj Journalists Union and former General Secretary of the Press Club.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, causing the attackers to flee. Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Nazrul Islam, confirmed the arrest of Masud Rana Rony, who is known to be a close associate of Advocate Sakhawat Hossain Khan, the Convenor of Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP. Police are actively working to apprehend other individuals involved in the attack.
On behalf of the Press Club, President Arif Alam Dipu stated that legal actions will be taken in response to the incident.
Numerous organizations, including the Narayanganj News Papers Owners Association, Narayanganj District Journalists Union, Fatulla Press Club, Bandar Press Club, Sonargaon Press Club, Araihazar Police Station Press Club, Rupganj Press Club, and Siddhirganj Police Station Press Club, have condemned and protested the attack.
