A court in Bagerhat on Wednesday sentenced five members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to different jail terms in a case filed over a bomb attack on police in Bagerhat in 2016.
Bagerhat Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Dr Md. Atiqus Samad handed down the verdict on Wednesday.
The convicts are Md. Jahirul Islam, son of Ashraful Ali Farazi of Raghunathpur village in Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur, Maksudur Rahman alias Tota, Son of Jumman Ali Sardar of Garerkanda village in Satkhira district, Morshed Alam, son of Gias Uddin of Kashimpur village of the same district, Saiful Islam, son of Abdul Karim of Itagachha village of the same district, Tariqul Islam alias Tarek, son of Sohrab Hossain of Natoikhali village in Bagerhat district.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer three months more imprisonment, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Advocate Md. Shahiduzzaman said.
Of them, four accused were sentenced to six years and one accused to five years in prison, he added.
According to the case statement, on November 03, 2016, Bagerhat Model Police came to know that six to seven JMB members were staying in Gobardia area under the Daratana Bridge of Bagerhat Sadar and preparing to carry out subversive activities.
When police reached there, JMB members hurled bombs and police opened fire in self-defence. Later, police arrested five JMB members from the spot.
On November 21, 2017, police submitted a charge sheet accusing five JMB members and charges were framed against the accused on May 2, 2019.
