DU Correspondent :
At least five students of Dhaka University (DU) were injured by an alleged attacks of some outsider leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League(BCL) on a pre-scheduled discussion meeting about the holy month of Ramadan atthe university campus.
The BCL attacked when the students of Law Faculty were preparing a meeting titled ‘productive Ramadan’ at the Bangabandhu Tower, a residential house of DU employees near the university’s medical center, on Wednesday.
The injured were identified as Rezwan Ahmed Rifat, Shahenur Alam Russel, Saqib Azad Turya, Rafid Hasan Safwan and Fahim Dastgir. Three of them were injured critically. They all are students of Law Department under 2020-21 session. The injured have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Several eyewitnesses said that some students of the Law Department of the university were discussing Ramadan after the Zohar prayer at Bangabandhu Tower, then the president of Bangabandhu Tower Welfare Association Sirajul Haque and several BCL leaders asked them to leave.
Later, while they were leaving and reached the crossing point of the gate of Bangabandhu Tower,a group of BCL leaders and activists beat them with sticks. However, Sirajul said that he knows nothing about who did the beating.
SwapanMia, a rickshaw puller who brought the victim to the hospital, said that’s several people who came on a motorcycle in front of Bangabandhu Tower beat them up. When they were left behind after a good beating, he brought them to the hospital in a rickshaw.
Injured Rezwan Ahmed Rifat said that they performed Zohar prayer at the ground floor of Bangabandhu Tower. After that there was a religious discussion and iftar mahfil on behalf of their department. Then some people came and asked them to leave. When they came out on the road, suddenly some people came with motorcycles and beat them up.
In-chargeof DMCH Police Outpost Md. Bacchu Mia said, “The condition of three of them is serious. They are being treated in two departments.”
Analysing CCTV footage and talking to several people, it is known that the BCL attacked them led by Tawhidul Islam Sujon, General Secretary of Shahbagh Thana BCL.
When asked about the attack, Sujan said, “I went there to offer prayers, I saw some people of DU discussing there, then the attack happened.” Claiming that he was not involved in the attack, he said, “I don’t know anything”.
Meanwhile, the victims claimed that the attack was carried out led by BCL leader Sujan at the instigation of Sirajul Haque.
Sujan has been in regular phone contact with Sirajul since last night, a video record of such call history also went viral on social media.
DU Proctor Prof M Maksudur Rahman said, “I am looking into the matter.”
However, students of the law department staged a human chain at Raju Scripture Memorial protesting the attacks.
