A Dhaka court has ordered five suspected members of a robbery gang to be sent to jail after they were arrested while allegedly planning a robbery in the city’s Motijheel area, pretending to be members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman issued the order on Thursday, court sources said on Friday. The magistrate passed the order on Wednesday after the five were produced before the court.
The accused are Abdul Mannan (35), Riad Hossain (37), Abdul Jalil (40), Md Matiur Rahman alias Matin Khan alias Matin Chora (37), and Paresh Adhikari (35).
Police said the arrests were made during a raid in Motijheel on 16 July, where the suspects were caught red-handed while allegedly preparing for a robbery disguised as elite force members.
During the raid, officers recovered two black belts marked with ‘RAB’, a black walkie-talkie, and a pair of handcuffs items believed to be used to impersonate law enforcement during the attempted robbery.
Sub-Inspector Md Tanvir Tushar of the Detective Branch filed a case with Motijheel Police Station on Wednesday in connection with the incident.
Court sources said the investigation officer requested that the suspects be kept in jail custody, which the court granted.
Police say further investigations are underway to determine whether the gang is linked to other similar crimes in the capital.
