At least five people have been detained in a joint operation over their suspected involvement in an attack on a Hindu people in Balapara village of Gangachara in Rangpur.
A press release issued by the Police Headquarters confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmud Hasan Mridha said that a victim filed a case with Gangachara Model Police Station on Tuesday afternoon. The name of the plaintiff in the case is not being disclosed for security reasons.
In connection with the incident, the person filed a complaint on July 29, accusing 1,000 to 1,200 unknown persons of vandalism and looting.
Earlier, two bouts of attacks have been carried out since Saturday night over an anti-Islamic facebook post, which the accused family has rejected as “conspiratorial.”
Since Saturday night, around 12 houses hosting 22 Hindu families have been vandalised, while three families related to the accused have fled to the nearby village.
The situation is now quiet amid the presence of Army and police, Rangpur district administrator Mohammad Rezaul Faisal said.
On Monday, district administrator Rezaul Faisal claimed 22 of the 19 families in the Hindu community of Aldadpur Balapara village of the district are staying in their places. However, some women in these 19 families have moved out due to damage to some properties.
