5 fishermen jailed for one month for defying hilsa ban

A mobile court on Saturday morning sentenced five fishermen to one month’s imprisonment and fined eight fishermen TK 5,000 each for catching hilsa defying the ban.
Joint teams of Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries conducted several drives in Elishaghat and Tulatuli areas of Sadar upazila early in the morning and arrested 13 fishermen, said coast guard sources.
The team also seized 10,000 metre current net and 150kg hilsa fish.
Later, the detained fishermen were produced before the mobile court led by executive magistrate Kamal Uddin at noon which sentenced five of them to one month’s imprisonment and fined eight of them Tk 5,000 each.
The government has imposed a ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of hilsa from October 12 to November 2 in 27 districts.
