5 fishermen caught with illegal deer traps

A boat carrying about two and a half maunds of nylon deer-catching traps, three bottles of pesticides and ice was seized in Katka Sanctuary in the Eastern Sundarbans on Monday afternoon, according to a delayed report received here.

On the other hand, five fishermen along with a trawler were arrested by the forest guards on the same day afternoon.

According to the forest department sources, based on a secret tip-off, a contingent of the forest guards led by Md. Khalilur Rahman, Officer of Sharankhola Forest Range seized a boat along with a huge quantity of deer-catching traps, three bottles of pesticides, ice and various deer hunting equipment in the Katka side canal in separate operations on Monday afternoon.

Sensing the presence of forest guards at that time, the deer poachers fled into the Sundarbans. Apart from this, forest guards arrested five fishermen along with a trawler and net while illegally fishing in the Gata canal on the same day afternoon.

The arrested fishermen are Bayjid Hossain, Rezaul Islam, Shahidul Islam, Alamin and Munna. All of them hail from Ruhita village of Patharghata Upazila under Barguna district. Rana Deb, Sharankhola Range Officer (ACF) of the Eastern Sundarbans Forest Division told, a case was lodged with the local PS against the arrested fishermen under the Forest Act. The arrested accused wer sent to the court at Bagerhat district headquarters.
