A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent five individuals to jail for allegedly impersonating senior Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officials and extorting money from victims by falsely promising to resolve corruption cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jennifer Jerin passed the order after their two-day remand concluded, rejecting their bail pleas.
The accused — Selim (40), Md Tarikul Islam (40), Md Atik (38), Md Abdul Hai Sohag (35), and Md Sohag Patwari (40) — were presented before the court by Sub-Inspector Md Masud Rana of Ramna Model Police Station, who requested they be held in custody.
The case came to light after Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (southern region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), shared a video on social media on 24 June, exposing the syndicate’s bribe demands.
