Five students injured in the Milestone School and College crash in Dhaka’s Diabari are currently in “critical condition” at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
At a Friday afternoon press conference, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, the institute’s director, gave an update confirming 40 patients are still in care.
He said: “At this moment, we have five patients in critical condition, and 10 categorised as severe cases. Another 25 fall under the intermediate group.
“Among them, 10 are now in post-operative care, while 15 have been shifted to cabins.”
Nasir added that four to five patients may be discharged on Saturday, with expectations that more could go home gradually in the coming days, reports bdnews24.com
The director said two patients on ventilators had regained consciousness and were breathing without support, though two children died earlier in the day.
Highlighting the rapidly changing condition of the patients, he said: “These are the updates for [Friday]. There is no new information beyond this.”
Earlier on Friday morning, Ayman, a 10-year-old student, died during treatment.
Roughly three and a half hours later, at 1:05pm, 13-year-old Makin was also pronounced dead.
Ayman, a fourth-grade student, was from Shariatpur, and Makin, a seventh grader, was from Gazipur.
The total death toll from the Milestone School tragedy has now reached 33.
At the start of the briefing, Nasir confirmed both children’s deaths and said he had personally overseen the handover of the bodies.
The institute arranged for their transport to their villages, and the district civil surgeon offices have been informed of all further procedures, he said.
The crash occurred around midday on Monday, when a Bangladesh Air Force jet slammed onto a building on the school campus.
It is now the deadliest military aircraft accident in the country’s history, with most of the victims being children.
A total of 50 burn and injury patients are still receiving treatment at the burn institute, CMH, and other hospitals.
