Sylhet Bureau :
The 48-hour strike by truck workers in Sylhet continues for the second day, demanding 5 points including the removal of the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner and opening of all stone quarries. The strike is being observed loosely until 1 pm on Sunday (July 6).
In the morning, it was seen that various raw materials markets and warehouses in Sylhet city had supplied several trucks with raw materials on Saturday night. As a result, although the prices of goods in the wholesale market have not been affected, traders are suffering in transporting goods locally. Sylhet District Workers Union President Md. Dilu Mia said, ‘All transport organizations in the district have united in this program. If our reasonable demands are not addressed quickly, a stricter program will come after the 48-hour strike.’
Meanwhile, it is known that the intensity of the movement has been kept somewhat relaxed for now. The strike callors said that they are not taking drastic steps right now, considering the Ashura on Sunday and the visit of BNP central leaders to Sylhet on Monday. The top leaders of the transport sector decided to wait for the implementation of their demands until Monday afternoon at a meeting on Saturday night.
However, the leaders have indicated that the movement may expand further from Tuesday (July 8) if the demands are not met. It is also heard that even public transport may come under the strike then. It is worth noting that on July 2, at a protest rally at Court Point in the city, the leaders of the organization set a deadline for the government to fulfill its demands by July 4. However, even after that deadline passed, the strike began at 6 am on Saturday as the administration did not accept the demands.
