43rd Anniversary of The New Nation

Latest New

In celebrating the 43rd founding anniversary of The New Nation, we like to present our today’s publication with a colourful and well-illustrated 32-page special supplement in addition to its normal publication. Hopefully, the contents of the articles focusing on issues of human interests, economics, public sufferings, literature, scientific breakthrough, social needs and politics will win the hearts of its ardent readers. We are exultant to note that the contributors, who are experts as economists, scholars, professionals and academics, have done a commendable job in presenting us with very perspective and rich articles.
The country’s oldest English daily, founded on October 15, 1981, The New Nation started from the beginning with the motto of “All the news without fear and favour”. Since then, it has been maintaining an editorial policy for the coverage and reporting by a group of its dedicated journalists. Then The New Nation was the only independent English daily in Dhaka city. And this independent stance had made this paper useful in ventilating people’s views and grievances. We brought to public focus subjects that were hidden under the veneer of social norms and exposed some of the deep-rooted hypocrisies that permeate our social life. Supported by readers of every nationality, both native and foreign, the daily has reached yet another milestone. It is truly impressive.
As a champion of democracy, human rights and private entrepreneurship, this paper during the last 42 years has succeeded in attracting the attention of a cross-section of people for its objective journalism. However, during this period the profession of journalism itself went through various upheavals marked by change from strict control of newspaper registration since the seventies to virtual free breeding of papers in the early nineties, politicization of newspapers and journalist unions after the restoration of democracy.
Bangladesh’s journey since independence after the nine-month of bloody war in 1971 began amidst conflicting rays of hopes and despair, and belief and incredulity. We fought for independence as the solution of economic disparity within a wider united Pakistan framework was not addressed. But after 50 years of independence, economic disparity within our own people has widened so much which is undreamed of. It’s really shocking too.
We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our valued readers, patrons and contributors who have inspired us constantly and have shown keen interest in our continuing progress and have given unstinted support in fulfilling our motto, “All the news without fear and favour.”
