A 4-year-old child has died in Kurigram’s Rajarhat Upazila when a fire broke out after her mother locked the house and left to listen to a sermon.
Four rooms and a kitchen in the house have been gutted by the blaze.
The death has left the family enshrouded in grief.
The incident occurred around 11:30pm on Friday in West Sukhadeb in Bidyananda Union, according to Abu Taher, a Rajarhat Fire Station official.
The child, named Irene, was the daughter of local resident Al Amin.
The Fire Service and locals say that Irene’s mother put her to sleep, locked the door, and left the house to attend an Islamic sermon in a nearby area. The fire started around 11:30pm and locals informed the Fire Service.
But all the rooms of the house were burnt by the time firefighters arrived. Irene had also died by then.
It took a long time to reach the scene as the communication network is not well developed in the area, Abu Taher said.
The body of Irene has been recovered and turned over to the police, he said. Initially, it seems that the fire started from an electrical short circuit.
The body was turned over to the family for burial on Saturday afternoon, according to Taslim Uddin, chief of Rajarhat Police Station.
