4 factories closed at Uttara EPZ

Nilphamari Correspondent :

Four factories at the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Nilphamari have been shut down following a wave of workers’ unrest.

The protest erupted on Monday, as workers demonstrated over wage discrimination and poor working conditions, leading to several clashes with police.

Workers alleged that they have long been facing issues such as low wages, unpaid overtime, lack of medical facilities, and inadequate access to safe drinking water and proper lunch spaces.

They claimed that repeated complaints to the authorities went unheeded.

Monday’s protest involved workers from four factories, including Deshbandhu and Section Seven.

The protesters said they were compelled to take to the streets after factory owners failed to keep previous promises.

Later, a delegation of workers submitted a written list of demands to the Director of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA).

Some workers also alleged that a few BEPZA officials have been siding with the factory owners in exchange for personal benefits, ignoring the legitimate grievances of the workers.
