4 dengue deaths logged

In the last 24 hours, four more people have died from dengue in Bangladesh, according to a report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday.

On Saturday, the DGHS reported nine deaths from the mosquito-borne disease. This brings the total number of dengue-related deaths to 51 in the first 13 days of October and 214 so far this year.

The DGHS stated that in the past 24 hours (from 8 AM Saturday to 8 AM Sunday), 660 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country. Of the latest fatalities, two were reported in the Dhaka South City Corporation area, and one each in the Dhaka North City Corporation and Mymensingh division.

An analysis of the DGHS report reveals that the highest number of dengue admissions in the last 24 hours was in Dhaka North City Corporation, with 207 patients admitted to various hospitals.

This was followed by 121 admissions in Dhaka South City Corporation, 111 in other parts of the Dhaka division, 71 in Khulna, 57 in Chattogram, 32 in Barishal, 23 in Rajshahi, 20 in Mymensingh, 17 in Rangpur, and 1 in Sylhet.

Last year, Bangladesh witnessed the highest dengue infection rate and death toll in its history. A total of 321,179 people were hospitalised due to dengue, and 1,705 lost their lives. The highest monthly death toll was recorded in September 2023, with 396 deaths and 79,598 hospital admissions.

So far this year, 42,470 people have been hospitalised with dengue. The highest number of deaths—114—occurred in hospitals within Dhaka South City Corporation, followed by 30 in Dhaka North City Corporation. Among the deceased, 50.5% were women, while 49.5% were men.

The most affected age group this year is between 26 and 30 years, with 25 deaths reported. However, the highest number of infections has been recorded in the 21-25 age group, with 6,602 cases.
