Four individuals died after entering a septic tank at Harinchhara Tea Garden in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar early Thursday (July 10), allegedly due to toxic gas inhalation.
Sreemangal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam confirmed the incident, saying the deaths occurred around 1:30 am. Another person was injured and has been referred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Rana Nayek (17), Shrabon Nayek (19), Krishna Robidas (20), and Nipen Fulmali (27) — all children of tea garden workers. The injured individual, Robi Bunarjee (20), was first treated locally before being transferred to Sylhet.
Sources say the tea estate is managed by Finlay Company. The victims were taken to the 250-bed Moulvibazar District Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
Dr. Sabyasachi Paul Tamal of the hospital stated, “The four individuals brought in at night were already deceased. Another person, Robi Bunarjee, was later brought in and initially treated here before being referred to Sylhet. According to family members, all of them had entered a septic tank. The exact cause of death will be determined after autopsy.”
