36 fishermen in Barishal sentenced to jail for defying Hilsa ban

Another 36 fishermen have been jailed for netting Hilsa in the last 24 hours violating imposed 22-day restriction in raiding various rivers of Barishal division till October 23, 2023.

Besides, a fine of 20 thousand and 5 hundred taka has been collected during this period.

Total 402 fishermen have been sentenced to imprisonment for various terms in 405 cases in the last 11 days.

Besides, a fine of 3 lakh 3 thousand 600 taka was collected from them during this period.

According to the information received from the Divisional Fisheries Office, 1,253 raids and 478 mobile courts were conducted in Barisal Division from October 12 to October 23 at 8 am.

Whereas in the last 12 days, the officers of the district and upazila offices of the Directorate of Fisheries visited 145 times different fish landing centers, 2 thousand 132 times different fish ghats, 3 thousand 628 times different fish farms and 2 thousand 319 times different markets in Barishal Division.

During this days total 8,814 Kg Hilsa and 17,97,900 meters fishing nets worth Tk.3,75,83 were seized.

Nasir Uddin, Assistant director of divisional fisheries office, said from midnight on October 11 to midnight on November 2, hilsa collection, transportation and marketing prohibited throughout the country, including the main breeding area of seven thousand square kilometers of the coast.

At this time, 3 lakh seven thousand 841 fishermen of Barishal division would be given 25 kg of rice.
