‘304 women raped in 6 months’

Bangladesh Mohila Parishad (BMP) Kendriya Committee’s Chairperson Ayesha Khanam on Tuesday said that at least 304 women were raped across the country in the last six months (January-June, 2014).
The rights leader disclosed it while addressing in a press conference at the city’s National Press Club on Tuesday.
Ayesha Khanam said that 82 were gang raped,
according to the own statistics based report of the BMP.
“Some 45 women were killed after rape. Besides, 127 were killed and 90 were tortured over dowry related occurrences, some 80 committed suicide due to unbearable torture and 15 were victims of fatwa,” she further claimed.
Ayesha Khanam said that the crimes like killing, torture and rape are posing threat to the country’s law and order condition.
She also said that political leaders, activists and humanitarian aid workers are not safe and being victimized.
She made 18 recommendations to ensure the safety of all professions of people irrespective of religion, cast, gender and class. The independence of judiciary is necessary to ensure the rule of law and order, to accelerate the trial of war criminals and not to give political shelter to the criminals.
The BMP’s General Secretary Maleka Banu and Executive Committee Member Kazi Sufia Akhter Sheuli were, among others, present in the function.
