NN Online:

A powerful earthquake that originated in Myanmar has also struck Thailand, causing the collapse of a 30-story under-construction building in Bangkok.

At least 43 construction workers are missing following the disaster, reports AFP.

The main earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock on Friday afternoon (March 28, local time), which led to the collapse of the high-rise structure.

Millions of people have been evacuated from homes and workplaces. Bangkok residents have been urged to stay outdoors to avoid further casualties in case of aftershocks. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency in the city. At least three deaths have been confirmed, with many still trapped under the debris, emergency responders say.

The Prime Minister has also canceled his scheduled visit to Phuket to hold an emergency meeting regarding the disaster.

Rescue teams are working around the clock to locate survivors.

Seven people have been pulled out alive from the rubble, according to rescue official Sangwut Wangphon. Emergency services, including ambulances and rescue teams, have rushed to the Chatuchak Market area, a popular spot for tourists, where the collapse occurred.

A viral video on social media shows the moment the skyscraper collapses along with a crane, sending a massive dust cloud into the air while panicked bystanders scream and flee.

Scottish tourist Fraser Morton, who was inside a shopping mall at the time, recounted:
“Suddenly, the entire building started shaking. People were screaming, and chaos erupted. Shoppers panicked, running down escalators in the wrong direction, causing a stampede inside the mall.”

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake originated near Sagaing, Myanmar, measuring 7.7 in magnitude.

A 6.4-magnitude aftershock hit the same area just minutes later, exacerbating the damage in neighboring Thailand.

Authorities fear hundreds may be injured, though the exact toll is still unclear. Rescue operations continue.
