Gafargaon (Mymensingh) Correspondent :
A heartbreaking incident occurred on the Brahmaputra River in the Pagla Thana area of Gafargaon upazila, Mymensingh, as three students drowned during a boat trip on Tuesday morning (July 2). The victims, including a 9th-grade girl and two young madrasa students, were swept away when their boat capsized during an outing connected to their half-yearly examinations.
The deceased have been identified as Shapla Akhter, a ninth-grade student of Bereata Dakhil Madrasa, and two classmates—Abid and Junaid—both first-grade students of the same institution. All three children hailed from Chartologi village of Pakundia upazila in Kishoreganj.
According to eyewitnesses and madrasa authorities, the group of nine had boarded a boat near the Banshia area of Tangab union around 9:30 am. While most of the passengers made it safely to shore, Shapla, Abid, and Junaid were unable to escape the strong current of the Brahmaputra and disappeared beneath the water.
Shapla’s body was recovered shortly afterward by local fishermen using nets. Despite hours of search efforts, the two boys remained missing. On Wednesday evening, around 7:00 pm, the bodies of Abid and Junaid were finally recovered in the Moharachala Ghat area of Tangla, a considerable distance downstream. Family members, along with the help of local volunteers, retrieved the bodies.
