Although a series of brutal murders have taken place in Maheshwarpasha area of Daulatpur police station in Khulna city, the main accused are still out of reach. Locals are spending their days in fear and anxiety. Experts think, over supremacy and drug peddling in the area might be reasons behind the murders.

On Tuesday night, September 30, miscreants shot and killed young Tanvir Hasan Shuvo while he was sleeping. Earlier, on July 11, expelled Jubo Dal leader Mahabubur Rahman Molla and on August 3, gher trader Al Amin were killed in the same area. Extreme fear prevails in Maheshwarpasha after three consecutive murders in a span of three months.

Locals said that although it was once an extremist-dominated area, old terrorists have recently returned and are involved in extortion, arms and drug dealing. Due to this, clashes and murders are taking place from time to time.

Although four people have been arrested in the murder case of Mahabubur Rahman Mollah, the main accused are still at large. The investigation officer of the case and OC (Investigation) of Daulatpur Police Station, Zahidul Islam, said, “Four people have been arrested so far in the murder case. Efforts are underway to arrest the rest.”

On the other hand, the police have not been able to arrest anyone in the murder case of Al Amin, a gher trader, even though two months have passed. SI Abdullah Al Mamun, the investigation officer of the case, said, “Efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspected accused.”

Locals have complained that the real criminals are hiding their identities immediately after the murder, while the victims are receiving threats. Abdul Karim Mollah, father of the deceased Mahabubur Rahman, said, “Even after three months, the real accused has not been caught. Instead, we are receiving threats. We cannot sleep at night out of fear.”

Awlad Hossain, brother of the deceased Al Amin, said, “Three murders have taken place in the same area in a span of about three months. My brother’s killers have not been caught yet. We are extremely scared.”

Locals said that if the police administration does not take strict action soon, more violence may spread in the area. Therefore, they demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and exemplary punishment.
