A Dhaka court has remanded three members of the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir in custody after they were detained for organizing the “March for Khilafah” in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. The accused—Monirul Islam, Mohatasin Billah, and Mahmoodul Hasan—were arrested in connection with the event, which aimed to disrupt Bangladesh’s unity and security by spreading extremist ideologies and inciting violence.
The court granted a two-day remand for Monirul Islam and one-day remands for Mohatasin Billah and Mahmoodul Hasan. The order was passed on Friday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Jonayed after a hearing. The investigating officer of the case requested a 10-day remand, but the court ruled in favor of the shorter period.
According to charges, Hizb ut-Tahrir planned to cause public panic, deteriorate law and order, and undermine Bangladesh’s sovereignty through its extremist actions. The group’s “March for Khilafah” was scheduled to take place after Friday prayers at the northern gate of Baitul Mukarram.
Mohatasin Billah, 40, had organized a meeting at his Uttara residence to prepare for the march, which led to the arrests of two suspects at 12:05 AM on Friday. Mahmoodul Hasan, 21, was apprehended shortly afterward. During interrogation, both suspects confirmed their involvement with Hizb ut-Tahrir, a group prohibited by the government.
