Three people arrested on charges of extortion by posing as July Uprising “coordinators” have been sent to jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Friday after a hearing on the investigating officer’s petition.
The accused are AHM Noman Reza, Tanjil Hossain, and Faria Akter Toma, reports bdnews24.com.
Uttara West Police Sub-Inspector Abdul Malek Khan, the investigating officer, produced them before the court and sought their transfer to jail. Defence lawyers applied for bail, but the court rejected the plea.
According to the case statement, the three entered a house in Uttara around midnight on Thursday, identifying themselves as “coordinators”.
They allegedly demanded Tk 1 million from Delwar Hossain, promising to have him cleared of a case.
Although Tk 550,000 was arranged, the accused reportedly pressed for the remaining amount by 4pm on Friday, issuing threats before leaving.
The victim’s family later filed a case with Uttara West Police Station. Police arrested Noman the same night near Airport Police Station.
Based on his confession, Tanjil and Toma were later detained from Uttara.
