Three local Awami League [AL] leaders were killed in separate incidents in Noakhali, Bogra and Jhenidah districts on Monday.
Of them, a local Awami League leader was killed by miscreants in Noakhali in the early hours of Monday. The victim was identified as Babul Mia, 60, vice president of AL Charmotuya Union unit and also a member of the party’s Noakhali Sadar Upazila committee, reports our Noakhali Correspondent.
Police said the body was found near a road in the morning. It was sent to the Noakhali Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
Charmotuya Union AL unit’s general secretary Kamal Uddin Bablu said that the victim was attacked near Duyamia area on way home by a motorcycle from Uday Shadur Hat at midnight. Locals found the body in the morning and informed police. Shudharam Police Station OC Anwar Hossain said that they suspect Babul Mia was killed as a sequel to an old feud. The police have started raids to nab the suspected killers, he added.
In another incident, the police recovered the slaughtered body of a local Awami League leader from a paddy field at Elangi union in Dhunot upazila of Bogra district on Monday morning, our Bogra Correspondent reports.
Elangi union AL president and UP chairman MA Tareque said deceased Shamsul Haque, 45, was vice-president of Elangi union AL. Shamsul might have been killed by his rivals over land dispute, he added.
Officer-in-Charge of Dhunot Police Station Ziaur Rahman said miscreants hacked to dead Shamsul while he was returning home at Vitapara village at 12 midnight on Sunday and later threw the body at a paddy field. The body was recovered at about 9:00am on Monday.
Another Awami League leader was killed in a clash between the two factions of ruling party at Baroda village under Shailkupa Upzila in Jhenidah district yesterday noon, our Jhenidah Correspondent reports.
The victim was identified as Md Rafique Ahamed, 40, a leader of local AL unit.
“The reason behind the death might be a long-standing rivalry between two groups of Awami League led by Anwar Islam and Nazrul Islam,” Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Hashem Khan said.
He said, “Both the groups were locked in clash at 12:30pm. Police rushed to the spot and fired bullets to being the situation under control.” The rival groups ransacked houses of opponents following the clash. Tension has been prevailing in the area. Huge contingent of police have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation.
