In Bangladesh, the spread of false information targeting women has now been identified as a concerning social and digital issue. Analysis by Rumor Scanner revealed that, from January to September this year, at least 21% of all identified rumors were related to women.
During the first nine months of this year, Rumor Scanner detected at least 68 pieces of misinformation involving 29 female celebrities from the entertainment industry. Of these, 50 pieces of content were found to involve the use of AI or digital technology.
Among these celebrities are Nusrat Imrose Tisha, Meher Afroz Shaon, Azmeri Haque Badhon, Prarthana Fardin Dighi, Tanzim Saiyara Totini, Bidya Sinha Saha Mim, Tasnia Farin, Mahia Mahi, Shabnam Bubly, Apu Biswas, Porimoni, Naznin Nahar Niha, Rafiat Rashid Mithila, Mehjabin Chowdhury, and Shabnam Faria.
In 36 of these fake contents, footage of Indian women was used, falsely claiming them to be images or videos of Bangladeshi entertainment celebrities. In the past nine months, the actress who fell victim to the most misinformation in the entertainment industry is Sadia Ayman. Of the 11 fake pieces circulated about her, 10 were AI-centered. Sadia told Rumor Scanner that she is aware of the situation and, during the conversation, expressed that those creating such content are committing a serious crime.
Regarding legal measures against fake content, Sadia Ayman believes that instead of addressing the problem individually, all those affected should unite to find a solution.
