Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said 28 October, 2006 was the worst day of anti-human crimes in the human history.
He said the ousted Awami League has been engaged in a campaign of terrorism from October 28, 2006, to August 5, 2024, and called for a trial against the party for their role in the “logi-boitha” (sticks-oars) mayhem.
The Jamaat Ameer made the remarks at a programme commemorating “logi-boitha” day at the Engineers Institution at Ramna in the capital on Monday.
The Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat-e-Islami organized the discussion to honor those who lost their lives during the clashes between Awami League, BNP, and Jamaat activists on October 28, 2006.
On this day in 2006, six Jamaat-e-Islami members were killed in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Baitul Mukarram area, and the attackers used sticks and oars.
On October 28, 2006, violent clashes erupted between supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and the Awami League in the Paltan and Baitul Mukarram areas of Dhaka.
It is alleged that Awami League President Sheikh Hasina instructed her party activists to come armed with ‘logis and boithas.’ The ensuing gunfire and brutal attacks triggered widespread outrage. Although a case was initially filed in connection with the violence, it was withdrawn after the Awami League came to power in 2009.
Remembering that incident, the Jamaat ameer said, “The interim government may not be able to complete the trial process, but it must start. This process should have begun on October 28, 2006, when the country, politics, and society lost direction amidst the brutality, and humanity was buried. Justice must be served for every killing from October 28 until August 5, 2024.”
BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas also spoke at the event, and he said, “We had only one goal: a Bangladesh without Sheikh Hasina. After a long struggle, we achieved Bangladesh without Hasina. Now, we must aim to make the country without the Awami League.”
He said, “The Awami League cannot coexist with decent people or with democracy. The Awami League is an ally of evil.”
The event was chaired by Md Nurul Islam Bulbul, a member of the Central Executive Council and Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat Ameer, while Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, General Secretary of Dhaka South Unit Jamaat, moderated the event.
