The long-awaited Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) election process began with a strong response as 28 nomination papers were collected on the very first day of distribution.
According to the Cucsu Election Commission, 26 nomination papers were collected for central union posts while two were submitted for hall unions. Chief Election Commissioner Prof Monir Uddin confirmed the matter, saying the level of interest among students had exceeded expectations.
“We are witnessing great enthusiasm among the students. Participation has already exceeded our expectations,” Prof Monir told reporters after the day’s distribution.
Among the nomination papers collected, seven were for the post of vice-president, two for general secretary (GS), and two for assistant general secretary (AGS). Other positions also drew candidates: one for office secretary, two for sports secretary and assistant secretary, two for career development and international affairs secretary, one for
science and ICT secretary, one for women’s affairs secretary, one for social welfare and environment secretary, two for literature and cultural secretary and assistant secretary, two for communication and accommodation secretary, one for liberation war and democratic movements secretary, and two for executive member posts.
For the hall unions, one nomination paper each was collected from Sir AF Rahman Hall and Bijoy 24 Hall.
The distribution of nomination papers will continue until Tuesday, September 16, while the deadline for submission is set for September 17. Voting for the Cucsu and hall unions will be held on October 12.
This year’s Cucsu election carries historic significance, as it comes 35 years after the last such polls were held in 1990. Students and observers alike have described the revival of the election as a milestone for democratic practice on campus.
