2,610 new pink buses to run from Thursday

A new ticket-based bus service is set to launch in Dhaka on Thursday to enhance traffic management and passenger safety.

Around 2,610 pink buses, operated by 21 different companies, will run on routes from Abdullahpur to various destinations across the capital, according to Md Saiful Alam, General Secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Saiful stated that passengers must purchase tickets in advance to board these buses and getting on or off at unauthorized stops will not be allowed.
He highlighted that the initiative aims to resolve the persistent issues associated with contract-based bus operations, which have contributed to unfair competition, traffic congestion, and frequent accidents.

Following a meeting with the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges in December, bus owners were instructed to transition to fixed-term contracts for drivers instead of trip-based agreements, Saiful noted. He added that the introduction of the ticketing system is the first step in implementing this directive.

The ticket counter service will be officially inaugurated in Abdullahpur at 10:30 am on Thursday.
Saiful also mentioned that similar counter-based ticketing systems will be rolled out in Mirpur, Gabtoli, and Mohammadpur later this month.

He further stated that eventually, all buses in Dhaka will adopt this system, requiring passengers to buy tickets from designated counters and board only at specified stops.

“Training sessions are currently being conducted for bus drivers and assistants to familiarize them with the new ticketing process and passenger service protocols,” he said.

The Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association underscored the need for transport workers to maintain polite and respectful behavior towards passengers.

The press briefing was attended by Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association President MA Baten, Treasurer ASM Ahmed Khokon, Office Secretary Kazi Md Jobair Masud, along with other association members.
