On the last day of 2021, i.e. December 31, the theatre group Batighar Theatre brought their 15th production ‘Monkey Trial’ on the stage.
The silver jubilee performance of ‘Monkey Trial’ is going to be held after four years.
The 25th performance of the play will be held today (Friday) at the Parikshan Theatre Hall of the National Theatre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 7:15pm.
Muktaneel has directed and staged the play ‘Monkey Trial’, based on the original story by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee.
The story of the play is based on the much-discussed ‘Scopes Monkey Trial’ in America in 1925, where an innocent school teacher discussed evolution and Darwin’s theory of evolution while teaching science to a class.
Due to which he was convicted of violating the Butler Act and the reactionary and fanatical fundamentalists of the time were furious. The science teacher was imprisoned for violating state law.
When the news was published in the media around the world, it sparked widespread discussion and criticism.
The case opened a new chapter in American history. ‘Batighar’ is organising a silver jubilee screening of the play ‘Monkey Trial’ on the centenary of the much-discussed incident of 1925.
