Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said Thursday that 25 people have been arrested over Wednesday’s violence surrounding a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj, and that operations will continue until all those involved are brought to justice.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, the adviser said 10 police personnel were injured in the clashes—two have already been admitted to the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh, with three more en route from Gopalganj.
He confirmed that the law and order situation in the area is now under control following the imposition of a 22-hour curfew starting 8pm Wednesday. The curfew was declared after incidents of vandalism, arson, and cocktail explosions during the NCP rally.
Regarding NCP’s accusations against law enforcement, Adviser Jahangir said instructions have been issued to the concerned agencies, who are doing their utmost under the circumstances. In response to questions on future prevention, he assured that all necessary precautions will be taken to avoid recurrence of such violence and that the ongoing drives will continue.
The adviser also thanked television channels for broadcasting the incident live and visited the injured officers at Central Police Hospital earlier in the day.
At least four people were killed and several others injured during Wednesday’s clashes between police and activists of the Awami League and its affiliates amid the NCP event in Gopalganj. In protest, NCP activists launched blockades on highways and major roads nationwide.
Later, NCP Convenor Nahid Islam called for an end to the blockade through a Facebook post and announced a countrywide protest rally on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the government has formed a three-member committee to investigate the violence.
