A large number of jewellery businesses operate in Dhaka without any VAT reg. We believe they disregard govt rules, regulations

Staff Reporter :

There are approximately 2,330 jewellery businesses operating in the Dhaka metropolitan area without Business Identification Numbers (BIN), commonly known as VAT registration, according to the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS).

The association has urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to take action to register these businesses, emphasizing their disregard for government rules and regulations.

In a letter addressed to NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan on January 22, BAJUS stated, “A large number of jewellery businesses operate in the Dhaka metropolitan area without any VAT registration. We believe they disregard government rules and regulations.”

The letter, signed by BAJUS General Secretary Badal Chandra Roy, highlighted the potential financial impact of registering these businesses.

“We believe that if these businesses are brought under registration, it could contribute a significant amount of revenue to the government exchequer,” the letter noted.

To support their claim, BAJUS has provided the NBR with a detailed list of the 2,330 unregistered jewellery businesses in the Dhaka metropolitan area.
The association emphasized that formalizing these businesses through registration would not only ensure compliance but also significantly bolster government revenue.
