Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday urged divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners (DCs) to carry out their responsibilities in the upcoming national election and referendum with complete honesty, impartiality, and dedication, emphasizing that the 2026 election is an election to save the country.
“This is not an ordinary election; it is an election that will determine the nation’s future,” he said while addressing the divisional commissioners and all DCs, including 50 newly appointed ones, at the Shapla Hall of the Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) this morning.
Highlighting the importance of the election, especially since it includes a referendum, the Chief Adviser noted, “This election is fundamentally different from a regular five-year election. The nation has witnessed numerous flawed elections in the past, and our role is to ensure the country moves beyond those experiences.”
“This is the first election following the people’s uprising, and it will complete that historic movement. The outcome of this election will shape the nation’s trajectory for generations,” he added.
Stressing the critical role of the DCs, Prof. Yunus said there can be no room for error. “Through this election, the nation will experience a rebirth, and the DCs must act as facilitators in this transformative process,” he stated.
“You must understand and prepare for everything necessary. The election should be conducted in a manner that is both peaceful and celebratory,” the Chief Adviser emphasized.
He pointed out that many young and female voters have been unable to exercise their voting rights over the past 15 years and asked the DCs to create an environment that allows them to vote with enthusiasm and joy.
Noting the keen interest of international observers in the upcoming election, Prof. Yunus said, “They are closely monitoring how this election is conducted and are very eager to witness it.”
Describing the elections as a decisive battle, he remarked, “Winning this election is essential for the survival of our freedom as a nation.”
The meeting was moderated by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, with Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul present.
Divisional Commissioner of Dhaka Sharf Uddin Ahmed Choudhury, newly appointed DC of Bogura Toufiqur Rahman, and Tangail DC Begum Sharifa Haque spoke at the event, sharing updates on their preparations for the upcoming polls.
