Twenty Bangladeshi youths, previously detained in Myanmar for illegal trespassing, have been repatriated on Sunday via a Bangladesh Navy ship from MITT Port in Yangon.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the individuals had been captured by Myanmar law enforcement while being trafficked to Malaysia by unscrupulous agents. After months of detention, their return was made possible following diplomatic negotiations and verification of their Bangladeshi nationality.
“The Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar arranged today’s repatriation following successful discussions with Myanmar authorities,” the statement said.
The repatriation took place aboard BNS Somudra Avijan, a Bangladesh Navy vessel that had arrived in Yangon earlier carrying 120 metric tons of humanitarian aid for earthquake-affected communities in Myanmar. Alongside the returnees, the 55-member Bangladesh Search and Rescue (SAR) and Medical Team—which had been in Myanmar for 10 days providing humanitarian assistance—also departed for home.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar, Dr. M Monwar Hossain, was present at the port during the handover ceremony. He commended the SAR team for enhancing Bangladesh’s image through their compassionate and professional service.
