2 more kids die, taking death toll to 32

The death toll rose to 32 in Monday’s fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in the capital’s Uttara, as two more children with critical burn injuries died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) on Thursday.

Fifteen-year-old Mahia succumbed to her injuries around 4:30pm on Thursday while 12-year old Mahatab passed away at 1:50pm at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the burn institute.

Resident Surgeon of the NIBPS Shawon Bin Rahman confirmed the deaths, saying that Mahia had 50 percent and Mahtab had 85 percent burn injuries.

According to the updated information till 5:30pm, provided by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the death toll in the aircraft stood at 31 while 51 injured are now undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the capital.

Cousin of deceased Mahatab, Rakib Hossain said Mahtab was a seventh grade student at Milestone School and College in Uttara.

Mahtab’s father, Minhazur Rahman Bhuiyan, lives in the Debidwar Thana area of Cumilla district, he said.

With the deaths of Mahia and Mahatab, 13 have so far died at the NIPBS.
So far, 42 people, seven with critical burn injuries, are now undergoing treatment at the burn institute.

The institute has been giving treatment to the burn injured in consultation with the medical team from Singapore General Hospital that arrived in the capital on Wednesday.

The government formally published the names of 22 people who died in the jet crash alongside 57 injured ones.

The Forensic DNA Lab of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has ascertained identities of five more persons killed in Monday’s air force fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College at Uttara in the capital.

“The CID collected 11 DNA samples and confirmed the identities of five female children,” said a CID press release.

The five children are: Okia Ferdous, daughter of Faruk Hossain and Salma Akter, Lamia Akhter Samia, daughter of Md Babul and Majeda, Afsan Akter Priya, daughter of Md Abbas Uddin and Minu Akhter, Raisa Moni, daughter of Md Shahabul Sheikh and Mim, and Marium alias Afia, daughter of Abdul Kadir and Umme Tamima Akter.

Bodies of six unidentified persons were kept at the morgues of Combined Military Hospital, while bodies of one person at the morgue of Lubana General Hospital and Cardiac Centre, said a handout of the PID on Wednesday.

DNA sample testing was carried out to hand over the bodies to their families.
